The Brodsky Quartet was founded in 1972 in Middlesborough, North Yorkshire, and was named after the great Russian violinist Adolf Brodsky. It soon acquired a reputation for fine playing and it is now recognised internationally as one of the great string quartets. Over the years it has seen only a few changes in personnel – indeed it still has two of the original players. It has given concerts around the world, made numerous recordings, and is known for playing complete cycles of string quartets, especially those of Shostakovich. Each of their three concerts will commence with an arrangement of a Bach sonata by Paul Cassidy, the quartet’s violist. This first concert also includes quartets by Schubert and Shostakovich.
